News/Blog Updates

How frequently should I post new content?

Show / Hide

You want to ensure that you are the go-to source for information on your industry.

How often you update your news/blog section can vary between businesses based on a number of factors, including but not limited to:

  • Time available to dedicate to writing
  • The expectations of your industry, for example lifestyle or fashion updates would be expected at a daily minimum while a manufacturer's site might do with a post each week or two

If you are dedicated to maintaining an active news/blog section on your website to help keep current and prospective clients aware of what's going on in your business and industry, you should try to add new content at least every two weeks. Much longer than that and you run the risk of your news becoming stale and readers getting their relevant updates elsewhere.

I'm stuck for ideas, what should I write about?

Show / Hide

Possibly the hardest part about maintaining a news/blog is coming up with interesting topics that are relevant to your industry and your readers.

Whatever you write about, you want to make sure that it offers informational value to your clients and prospective clients.

Topics that you might consider include:

  • Informing of upcoming special events that you will be attending
  • Local community-related topics that are relevant to your industry
  • How-to's or Top 3-5 lists (Top 10's are too long)
  • Special offers on services or products
  • Profiles of your products/services in action or customer stories
  • Industry news or developments that your readers might find interesting

What should a news/blog post look like?

Brief and Informative

Regardless of the topic that you choose to write about, ensure that your post sticks to the specific theme and is as concise as possible. You should ideally be able to get your message across in 200 words, or even less. Any longer and you should consider breaking up the content into multiple posts.

Use keywords that are relevant to your business, industry, and the topic being written about throughout the post, but especially in the titles and headings.

Styling

Be sure to visually break up content using styles such as headings, bullets, numbered lists, and short paragraphs. If you're going to include photos with your post, don't go overboard, really just one or two are all that's needed.
